Our group focuses on understanding the mechanisms that control the mechanical properties of materials. We study a broad range of materials types, including metals, intermetallic compounds, composites with ceramic and metal matrices, and bone. A principal strength of our research is to develop unique mechanical tests that are used to probe the properties of materials to reveal the mechanisms that control mechanical properties. These micro-mechanical probes are coupled with fundamental theories and models of deformation and fracture to develop a mechanistic understanding. This level of understanding will enable the design of new materials with properties tailored for advanced transportation and energy systems.
